Internal theft is a significant concern for retailers, and a big part of the unknown loss problem however you could be excused for thinking that since the ECR report on staff dishonesty (published in 2003) there is nothing new or that innovative in the interventions being prioritised by retailers. As an industry expert recently remarked, "on internal theft, we are still working in analogue"

In this session, Professor Adrian Beck shared what we know about the problem of internal theft thus far, and the scale and extent; who steals and how does it occur? And addressed the question as to why it ‘seems’ internal theft always seems to be a low loss prevention priority?

The group discussion explored themes around managing internal theft. Staff searches was one area of discussion, some argued they play no role in their business, some argued and stated how they have relaunched their staff search programmes, while others recognised that staff searches have taken a back seat during the pandemic.

The importance of senior management engagement, and their discipline and zero tolerance was highlighted. The use of "black lists" was being used in some countries to help retailers be aware of potential risks. Training on doing the right thing was mentioned as a cornerstone of any internal theft strategy. Finally, there was some discussion on the use of technology, such as biometrics for access controls.
